چکیده

This article isolates the systematic effects of the soil profile on earthquake ground motions recorded at vertical seismic arrays. An empirical Green’s function is calculated for a soil interval between two sensors in a vertical array. The estimation technique used here falls into the category of site-response estimates but differs from the standard spectral ratio methods in that an extended Weiner filter (ARMA model) becomes the impulse-response function from one point to another in the soil profile. This method allows quantification of the accuracy of predicted ground motions at a given site with normalized mean square prediction errors generally under 10%, indicating effective and consistent estimates. The models are shown to reproduce site ground motions for inputs that differ over a wide range of peak ground acceleration (PGA), hypocentral locations, and over numerous occurrences. We demonstrate consistency of site ground-motion estimates at four sites that have undergone multiple strong shakings: Chiba, Japan; Garner Valley, California; Lotung, Taiwan; and Port Island, Japan. Consistency of site response over a wide range of shaking levels indicates an “effective” range of linear soil behavior for PGA up to 0.33 g at Chiba, 0.1 g at GVDA, and 0.21 g at Lotung. At Port Island, consistency was evident below 16 m at a surficial PGA of 0.54 g, but the surface layer liquefied. Results are presented as predicted time series and in the frequency domain with calculated variance. Results from Garner Valley and Chiba indicate that the location and magnitude of significant impedance contrasts within the soil profile control response. This article concentrates on levels of shaking that do not excite the soils into phase transitions. Our results indicate that strong nonlinear behavior (liquefaction) controls site response, but more minor and localized softening of the soil may not alter the site response enough to deter prediction within 10%.

Using the Adaptive Frequency Nonlinear Oscillator for Earning an Energy Efficient Motion Pattern in a Leg- Like Stretchable Pendulum by Exploiting the Resonant Mode

In this paper we investigate a biological framework to generate and adapt a motion pattern so that can be energy efficient. In fact, the motion pattern in legged animals and human emerges among interaction between a central pattern generator neural network called CPG and the musculoskeletal system. Here, we model this neuro - musculoskeletal system by means of a leg - like mechanical system cal...

Estimating catches with automatic identification system (AIS) data: a case study of single otter trawl in Zhoushan fishing ground, China

The sailing tracks of single otter trawl vessels were simulated using cubic hermite spline (cHs) interpolation method based on the automatic identification system (AIS) data of 6 sampled vessels that were fishing in the Zhoushan fishing grounds after the close of the fishing season from September 2012 to January 2013.  The vessels’ status (i.e. whether the vessels were fishing or not...

Influences of temporal evolution of ground motion frequency content on developed dynamic ratcheting in SDOF systems

Dynamic Ratcheting (DR) is a nonlinear dynamic phenomenon occurring in hysteretic damping systems. It means the structural plastic deformation increases asymmetrically in successive cycles under an earthquake excitation. Although it is generally recognized that DR is closely related to the frequency contents of an earthquake excitation applied to thestructure, no targeted analysis has bee...

Hybrid Empirical Ground Motion Model for Pga and 5% Dampedlinear Elastic Response Spectra from Shallow Crustal Earthquakes in Stable Continental Regions: Example for Eastern North America

The widespread application of the hybrid empirical method (HEM) has made it a viable approach for developing ground motion prediction equations in regions where there are few strong motion recordings but there are ample weak motion data from small-magnitude earthquakes. The HEM uses empirical estimates of ground motion in one region (the host region) to provide estimates of ground motion in ano...
